Gundam franchise is a Japanese military science fiction media franchise created by Yoshiyuki Tomino for the studio Sunrise in 1979. The franchise is known for its "mecha," or giant robots, which are called mobile suits. It is credited with pioneering the "real robot" subgenre of mecha anime, which portrays the robots as military hardware with realistic limitations, as opposed to the fantastical "super robots" of earlier series.
